Walgett Shire

Walgett is the rural service centre for an enormous pastoral area which stretches to the state border. The town describes itself as the ‘Gateway to the Opal Fields’ as it is on the road to Lightning Ridge and the Grawin, Glengarry and Sheep yard Opal Fields.

Agriculture is the primary industry in the region with a heavy reliance on dryland farming and grazing. The commercial service centre, including real estate, agricultural support, education and training, public administration, retail and health care also feature in the Walgett area, along with tourism and opal mining.

Walgett Shire has all the ingredients for a great country lifestyle – the community is friendly and relaxed, there is minimal traffic and a range of recreational and sporting activities is on offer.
